This July, Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory lands in Manila, bringing with it not just a swirl of childhood nostalgia but a new kind of magic. Beyond the shimmering chocolate rivers, quirky inventions, and unforgettable characters, the real enchantment is a promise: to open the world of theater to even more people.

After a triumphant run in Shanghai, the Manila engagement arrives with a buzz of excitement.

Breaking Barriers with Filipino Sign Language (FSL)

As Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory readies for its Manila debut, the production swings its doors open wider than ever with a special Filipino Sign Language (FSL)-interpreted show. Crafted for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing audiences, this initiative shines as part of a growing movement in the local arts scene to share the magic of live theater with everyone.

On July 22 at The Theatre at Solaire, the show will come alive with live FSL interpretation, thanks to the expertise of Deaf consultants and interpreters from the Center for Education Advancement of the Deaf (CEAD) and the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS). This partnership is another leap forward for accessibility in Philippine performing arts, as the spirit of inclusion gains momentum.

Inspired by Roald Dahl’s timeless novel, the musical whisks audiences away to Willy Wonka’s fantastical world, where imagination runs wild.

A Passport to Another World for Everyone

For countless theater lovers, a night at the theater is a passport to another world. Knowing that this adventure should belong to everyone, the production has set aside special seating with perfect views of both the stage and the interpreters, so every audience member can dive headfirst into Charlie Bucket’s extraordinary journey.

Live theatre should be an experience everyone can enjoy,” says Marc Routh, CEO of Broadway Asia.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a story about imagination, possibility, and wonder, and we’re excited to help make that experience more inclusive for members of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community.”

This initiative continues GMG Productions’ mission to open the doors of international theater in the Philippines even wider, working hand in hand with the Deaf community and sign language experts to make every performance more welcoming.

Beyond the shimmering chocolate rivers, quirky inventions, and unforgettable characters, the real enchantment is a promise: to open the world of theater to even more people.

Star Power and Local Flavor

After a triumphant run in Shanghai, the Manila engagement arrives with a buzz of excitement, especially with Karylle stepping into the shoes of Mrs. Bucket. Renowned for her versatility, the Filipino star infuses the role of Charlie’s devoted mother with warmth and a sense of home, giving the beloved tale a distinctly local flavor.

Pure Imagination and Modern Stage Magic

Inspired by Roald Dahl’s timeless novel, the musical whisks audiences away to Willy Wonka’s fantastical world, where imagination runs wild. Chocolate rivers never stop flowing, squirrels sort nuts with astonishing skill, and the Oompa-Loompas add a dash of mischief to every twist and turn. Beloved tunes like “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man,” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket” join a fresh score from Tony and Grammy Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

The production dazzles with theatrical innovation, weaving immersive visual effects, hologauze 3D magic, and grand illusions that turn Wonka’s factory into a place where the impossible suddenly feels possible. For illusion designer Tim Clothier, this project is a rare creative playground, letting him conjure new wonders for the world’s greatest dreamer.

More Than a Golden Ticket

At its heart, however, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is more than a feast for the eyes. It is a celebration of possibility, curiosity, and finding your place in the world. By championing accessibility and representation, this Manila production offers something even richer than a golden ticket: the chance for more people to revel in the joy, wonder, and shared magic of live theater. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory runs at The Theatre at Solaire from July 8 to July 26, 2026.

The production is presented by Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia, in association with AMA Group of Companies and GMG Productions.
