A Ray of Hope Amid the Guisad Surong Landslide
Even in the darkest moments after a disaster, small miracles offer comfort.
For instance, search and rescue teams pulled a dog alive from heavy debris after nearly 24 hours in Guisad Surong, Baguio City. Tragically, the dog’s owners lost their lives in the landslide. Rescuers found the pet near the area where two human victims were earlier retrieved.
In total, crews have rescued 11 pets from the site while searching tirelessly under dangerous conditions. Meanwhile, authorities are still searching for three missing individuals. As operations continue, officials urge residents to stay alert for hazards like soil erosion, falling trees, and ground cracks. In emergencies, people should call 911 immediately.
Milo’s Rescue and Road to Recovery
Shortly after her rescue, responders brought the brown female dog, now named Milo, to the City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO). Vets quickly performed an emergency checkup to evaluate her health. They noted:
During the initial examination by the veterinarians, no external injuries were noted. However, Milo was mildly dehydrated. She was immediately provided with electrolytes, water, and food, and was temporarily housed in the neutering room for observation and monitoring.”
However, during supervision, Milo displayed neurological signs that indicate an underlying health issue. Consequently, she requires continuous observation and medical management. Fortunately, with approval from her late owner’s daughter, Milo was placed in temporary foster care with Ms. Shayne.
As a result, she is now receiving the daily care, warmth, and monitoring she needs to recover.
‘No Pets Left Behind’
Meanwhile, heavy monsoon rains (Habagat) continue to impact nearby regions.
To help, local authorities are taking active steps so four-legged family members are not forgotten during evacuations. For example, the Quezon City Veterinary Department created a special pet shelter in Barangay Bagong Silangan under their “No Pets Left Behind” initiative.
As a result, evacuating residents do not have to leave their beloved animals behind in flooded homes. So far, the facility has safely accommodated around 32 dogs and cats, keeping them safe and fed until the storms pass.
