High in Vietnam’s mist-wreathed northern peaks, where terraced rice fields give way to dramatic mountain passes, Sapa has long drawn travelers seeking awe-inspiring landscapes. But beyond its sweeping valley views, a quieter, deeply soulful story is unfolding within the gilded walls of Hotel de la Coupole Sapa – MGallery Collection.
A Fusion of French Haute Couture and Hill Tribe Heritage
Designed by visionary architect Bill Bensley, the property is a romantic homage to two distinct eras: the vibrant runway glamour of 1920s French haute couture and the intricate, colorful heritage of northern Vietnam’s hill tribes. Antiques, handcrafted textiles, and vivid hues are seamlessly woven into the hotel’s fabric, turning a simple stay into a journey through design. Now, that artistic narrative expands with Upon the Mountain, Down the Hill, an intimate gallery exhibition that brings contemporary Vietnamese artistry directly into the guest experience.

Curated in partnership with Hanoi Studio Gallery, the lobby-level exhibition features 28 works by five of Vietnam’s compelling artistic voices: Pham Thai Binh, Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, Nguyen Quoc Trung, Pham Tra My, and Pham Thuy Tiên. Together, their paintings, sculptures, and lacquer installations offer a poetic lens on highland life, nostalgia, and quiet human connection.
Contemporary Voices and Traditional Craftsmanship
Among the standout pieces is Pham Thai Binh’s sculpture Whisper, which captures a young couple sharing a bicycle ride—a tender, familiar scene inspired by northern mountain communities and rendered with quiet emotion.

Nearby, Pham Thuy Tiên’s Mơ Tiên series explores memory and youth across circular and petal-shaped canvases that feel like portals into a childhood dreamscape.

The collection also pays homage to the luminous beauty of traditional Vietnamese lacquer. Artists like Pham Tra My reinterpret this centuries-old medium through modern perspectives, demonstrating how heritage craftsmanship continues to evolve in contemporary hands.
An Invitation to Experience Sapa’s Living Art
Art, architecture, and local culture blend together so naturally here,”
notes Ms. Linh, a visitor to the exhibition.
It makes the hotel feel like more than just a place to stay—it becomes a destination to truly discover the spirit of Sapa.”
Part of MGallery’s global Heritage Days initiative, the exhibition highlights the property’s commitment to celebrating local art and story-driven hospitality.

As the hotel looks ahead to cultural programming through 2027, Upon the Mountain, Down the Hill stands as a soulful invitation: spend the morning trekking mountain trails, then the afternoon surrounded by the finest expressions of modern Vietnamese art.
The exhibition is open to hotel guests, residents, and travellers until October 25, 2026, at the Art Gallery Area on the lobby level of Hotel de la Coupole Sapa – MGallery Collection, located at 1 Hoang Lien Street.
