Fashion is a choice

My exposure to writing has been quite minimal. My experience is mostly limited to composing essays in secondary school and preparing simple speeches for occasions when I needed to inspire an audience.

So, when Myke Tatung, the celebrity chef and chief executive officer of Simpol.ph, casually asked if I could write, I said yes, though I admitted I might not be very good at it. Then, to my surprise, he asked if I would be interested in joining their organization as a fashion columnist. My eyes immediately lit up with excitement.

For the longest time, I had been yearning to do something different beyond simply creating fashion, my greatest passion. Every now and then, I am invited to sit on judging panels to determine who is the fairest (and smartest) among candidates or to recognize the most promising talents among a bevy of young designers. In addition to that, I teach what I learned as a scholar at the prestigious École Lesage in Paris. I also travel frequently and make time for Zumba to keep myself active. I pursue all of these with passion, yet I knew there was still a small void in me that needed to be filled, the desire to be heard. Writing a column felt like the perfect way to satisfy that longing.

One fine afternoon, I received a formal letter of invitation from Mr. Edison Gonzales, editor-in-chief of Simpol.ph. His words were both flattering and deeply relatable. I was dumbfounded. As I hesitated and questioned whether I should embark on this new endeavor, I saw my own potential through someone else’s perspective. And so, here I am, armed with the basics of writing and four decades of extensive experience in fashion, presenting my first foray into the world of authorship.

Of course, I will write about fashion — what else? But beyond trends and styles, I want to take you on a personal tour of the creative world.

I will explore the current state of fashion in the Philippines, and perhaps even overseas, whether it’s on the streets or the runway. The key figures in Philippine fashion will not go unnoticed. Their inspiring journeys and relentless pursuit of creativity will offer you a more personal look at who they truly are. I will also introduce you to the next generation of young, promising designers who are reshaping the industry.

But fashion is not just about the designers and the runways. Behind all these creative geniuses are real people with stories waiting to be told. And beyond their work, I want you to understand their vision, struggles, and triumphs.

In my columns, you can also expect fashion tips, practical insights that will help you discover your personal style and bring out the best in you. Fashion is basic, yet transformative. Its mission is to make the wearer look and feel their best. But just like any other choice in life, fashion is a decision, and my mission is to help guide you in making the right one.

Together, we will make fashion choices easier, smarter, and perhaps even more exciting.

Until then… I’m not your guru,  just a friend reminding you to stay fabulous. Be in fashion!
