In 1993, Michael Jackson brought his Dangerous World Tour to the city, performing two sold-out concerts that became part of his extraordinary global journey. More than three decades later, his music and movement are returning to Singapore — this time through the world of musical theatre.
The four-time Tony Award-winning production will make its Singapore debut at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, for a limited season beginning in August 2027, bringing one of contemporary musical theatre’s most ambitious celebrations of Jackson’s artistry to audiences in the region.
For those who remember Jackson at the height of his career, the production offers a chance to revisit the songs, choreography and visual language that defined a generation. For younger audiences who never experienced the performer live, it offers something different: an opportunity to encounter his work through the intimacy and immediacy of the stage.
From Stadium Spectacle to Broadway Stage
Set in 1992, as Jackson prepares for his Dangerous World Tour, the musical takes audiences into the rehearsal room and behind the scenes of a production that would become a defining moment of his career. The story unfolds through the perspective of an MTV journalist with unusual access to the creative process, allowing the audience to see the artist not simply as a global superstar, but as a meticulous, driven creative force shaping every detail of his vision.
Written by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, the musical traces pivotal moments in Jackson’s artistic life while exploring the ambition, collaboration and imagination behind the performances that audiences came to know around the world.
With more than 25 of Jackson’s best-known songs — including Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Man in the Mirror and Thriller — the production moves between intimate rehearsal-room moments and the exhilarating scale of a concert spectacle. Jackson’s unmistakable vocabulary of movement is equally important, brought to the stage through the choreography and direction of Christopher Wheeldon OBE.

That sense of movement is one of the production’s defining characteristics. Rather than simply recreating Jackson’s most famous performances, MJ explores the creative thinking behind them — the precision, experimentation and relentless pursuit of an idea that helped make Jackson such an influential figure in popular culture.
This quality has resonated far beyond Broadway. Since its debut, MJ has been seen by more than eight million people through productions in New York, London’s West End and Hamburg, as well as tours across the United States and Australia. The production has also collected major theatrical honours, including four Tony Awards, with Wheeldon taking home Best Choreography. His work on the London production was subsequently recognised with an Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreography.
The show’s scale is matched by its creative team. Scenic design comes from Tony Award and two-time Emmy Award winner Derek McLane, while six-time Tony Award winner Natasha Katz oversees lighting. Paul Tazewell, whose credits include Hamilton and Wicked, brings his costume design to the production, alongside sound design by Tony and Olivier Award winner Gareth Owen. Tony Award nominee Peter Nigrini designs the projections, with Emmy Award nominee Charles LaPointe on hair and wigs and Joe Dulude II on makeup.
The result is a production designed to feel as expansive and meticulously constructed as the world Jackson himself created.
