When Puregold, in partnership with Wishbone Collective, launched Teatro Panalo, the vision was clear: to create a platform for original Filipino theater. What followed surpassed expectations.
Running from August 8 to September 11, the festival’s first call for submissions received 373 entries. Both emerging and established playwrights took part. For a debut festival, the response speaks to the depth of talent in the local theater scene. It also shows how many Filipino stories are still waiting to be told.
Beyond the Stage
Teatro Panalo is more than a seasonal showcase. It is also designed as a space for incubation and development. Festival Director Vincent de Jesus said the response comes with a responsibility. The team must now help support and nurture these creative voices.
Through resources and mentorship, the initiative hopes to strengthen the local theater ecosystem. It also aims to create opportunities for directors, actors, designers, and production crews. The goal is to build a more sustainable theater community. It also seeks to honor the legacy of past festivals while opening new paths for Filipino theater.
The Road to Production
From 373 submissions, only 12 works will be selected for full production. These will include eight straight plays and four musicals. Each selected playwright will receive ₱100,000 in financial support. They will also receive comprehensive production assistance.
The journey does not end with the festival. One straight play and one musical will receive development grants. These grants will help turn the works into full-length productions. With Teatro Panalo, Puregold is expanding its storytelling efforts from film to live theater. The next chapter begins when the festival runs from February 18 to March 14, 2027.
