James Reid is embracing the simple joy of living in the present. Released on August 27, 2026, via Sony Music Entertainment, his latest single, “Sunny Side,” features producer and artist Luke April. With his new single, James traded public expectations for creative liberation, and found his way back home.

The alternative pop track moves with a breezy, effortless energy. It blends lively production, an easygoing rap verse, and an inventive mix of filtered drums and guitars. Bright and thoroughly relaxed, the song evokes the quiet satisfaction of having nowhere to be and feeling entirely at peace with the day ahead.

Beyond the Carefree Surface

Yet, beneath its sunny disposition lies a deeper reflection on independence. For Reid, the track reflects a grounded understanding of personal autonomy—specifically, the power of choosing his own identity rather than letting external opinions shape it.

Yes, it’s about freedom, but it’s also about feeling untouchable,” the multi-hyphenate artist explained in a press statement.

Who I am is not defined by what people think; it’s who I choose to be despite what people think. Say what you want, I’ll be here on the sunny side.”

Magic in the Garden

This sense of liberation was born from a strikingly spontaneous creative process. Produced by Luke April, “Sunny Side” and several other tracks from Reid’s upcoming project were crafted during a week-long session in a makeshift outdoor studio behind an Airbnb.

With instruments scattered across the yard, fellow musicians drifting in and out, and no rigid goals, the collaborators simply let the music flow. Reid noted that this pressure-free environment allowed room for pure instinct, leaving the track to take shape through improvisation rather than strict structure.

April brought a distinct alt-pop-rock sensibility to the mixing board, drawing inspiration from artists like Dominic Fike and Jean Dawson. He specifically cited Fike’s “Sunburn” and Dawson’s “Bruiseboy” as key influences.

Each section of the song sounds a tiny bit different from each other, which makes the listening experience more fun and journey-like,” April shared.

For every project that I do, whether it’s for someone else or my own, I turn off my smarty-pants brain and just let the ‘source’ do its thing. No overthinking, keep mistakes, be patient for happy accidents, and make sure everyone’s having fun during the session.”

The Arrival

The resulting record feels deliberately unpolished and lived-in, yet it retains the sharp polish of modern alt-pop. It is a song tailor-made for spontaneous road trips, warm afternoons, and unplanned days with friends.

More than just a seasonal anthem, “Sunny Side” offers a preview of Reid’s upcoming album, honey, i’m home, set to release on September 10, 2026. The project highlights a confident leap forward in his songwriting and sound, cementing his place as an artist with a sharp ear for global hits.

For Reid, the album marks a long-awaited homecoming rooted in self-acceptance.

Honey, I’m home comes from a place of quiet confidence: a self-assuring kind of love, from freedom as acceptance, not rebellion,” Reid reflected.

Home is where I’m most myself.”
