There is something irresistibly funny about watching a performance fall apart. Especially when the actors are doing everything they can to keep it together.

Consequently, that is the exact premise behind The Play That Goes Wrong. This Olivier and Tony Award-winning comedy brings its wonderfully disastrous brand of theatre to Manila this November. At the center of the chaos is Filipino stage actor Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante. She plays Sandra, a member of the fictional Cornley Drama Society trying to stage a 1920s murder mystery.

The Ultimate Theatrical Catastrophe

Playing Florence Colleymoore, Sandra gets caught in a performance where almost everything goes wrong. Props vanish, lines slip from memory, and the set takes on a life of its own. Ultimately, the main challenge is keeping the mystery alive while the production spirals into ridiculous territory.

A Star-Studded Career and Global Cast

For Bradshaw-Volante, this role adds another colourful chapter to a theatre career spanning over a decade. Ever since her professional debut as Liesl in The Sound of Music at Resorts World Manila in 2011, she has moved seamlessly between hit musicals. Furthermore, her regional resume includes roles in Kinky Boots, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and Sweeney Todd.

More recently, she appeared as the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods, Antonia in Man of La Mancha, and Raquel in Anthropology. Additionally, she earned a Gawad Buhay Award for her performance in Carousel.

Now, she steps into a comedy built around precision, timing, and chaotic realism. Meanwhile, she joins an international ensemble from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Directed by Hannah Sharkey, the cast features performers like Tom Babbage, Owen Jenkins, and Olivia Charalambous.

Bringing World-Class Chaos to Manila

For GMG Productions founder and CEO Carlos Candal, featuring a top-tier Filipino artist alongside an international cast is deeply meaningful. He notes that bringing together performers from five countries reflects the company’s ambition to offer world-class theatre while letting local talent shine.

Initially, the show started with just four paying customers at London’s Old Red Lion. However, created by Mischief’s Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, it quickly turned into a global comedy hit. It has since won major accolades, including the Olivier and Tony Awards.

Ultimately, the show proves that theatre does not need to be polished to be entertaining. Sometimes, the most memorable moments happen when everything completely falls apart.
