Landmark Collaborations with KEXP and KOREA SPOTLIGHT
A major highlight of this year’s program is a landmark partnership with Seattle-based public radio station KEXP. For the first time in the station’s history, the world-renowned Live on KEXP series will record sessions on the Asian continent.
Select artists from the AXEAN lineup will record live performances during the event. Delivering critical global exposure to independent talent across the region. Chris Sanley, Executive Producer of Live on KEXP, explains that while digital platforms make online connections seamless. Significant barriers often prevent international acts from traveling to their Seattle studios.
Consequently, the team has spent nearly two decades traveling to international music hubs to record artists where they are. Guided by the philosophy of going directly to the music.
For Diana Ratsamee, host of KEXP’s Eastern Echoes. The partnership offers an essential opportunity to reshape how international audiences engage with Asian music.
In American and international media, our stories have long been underrepresented and our music boxed into narrow definitions and expectations.”
She shares that Asian stories have historically been underrepresented in global media. With the music often confined to narrow expectations.
KEXP’s show, Eastern Echoes exists to reflect the incredible breadth of sounds that make up our Asian communities, and this partnership with AXEAN Festival will expand on that work in amazing ways.”
Through Eastern Echoes and this new collaboration with AXEAN Festival, the team aims to reflect the incredible breadth of sounds emerging from Asian communities worldwide. Simultaneously, the festival welcomes KOREA SPOTLIGHT. The flagship showcase presented by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST) and the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA).

Spotlighting Regional Urban Sounds Through SEA URBAN

This fresh platform pairs a curated music showcase with an industry panel examining the cultural influence. Evolving identity, and international potential of Southeast Asian urban music.
By uniting artists from across the region, the initiative creates a dedicated space to examine how local roots influence contemporary global genres.
AXEAN Festival co-founder Piyapong Muenprasertdee emphasizes the distinct cultural weight carried by the movement.
Hip-hop sits in an interesting place: it’s mainstream, trendy, and fashionable, but it also carries real weight because it resonates with the struggles of urban youth,”
He observes that while hip-hop remains trendy and mainstream, it carries deep resonance because it speaks directly to the experiences of urban youth.
He notes that Southeast Asian hip-hop is uniquely shaped by its origins, as artists seamlessly weave traditional local sounds into their production.
What sets Southeast Asian hip-hop apart is that each scene is shaped by where it came from, with artists weaving traditional sounds into their beats—which makes every country’s scene distinct and worth the world discovering.
Presenting these distinct national scenes on a shared regional stage provides these rising voices with the platform needed to cross borders, collaborate, and reach wider international audiences.
