The menace of sickening news

A lack of affirmation leads to nothing but information mishaps.

With the advent of technology, misinformation, malinformation, and disinformation have become pervasive in society, posing a significant threat to public discourse and individual well-being. The rapid spread of false information through various channels has created an environment where truth is obscured, leading to alarming consequences. The gravity of this problem demands immediate attention.

News dissemination has never been faster. However, misleading information and fabricated data are also spreading at an alarming rate, infiltrating media platforms everywhere. The rise of misinformation and disinformation is a silent menace, eroding the very foundations of society. The problem lies in the ease with which falsehoods gain credibility in the digital age. With a single click, false narratives can reach millions, shaping perceptions and influencing decision-making. This not only erodes public trust but also undermines the foundation of a well-informed and rational society.

A recent report from the Second Congressional Commission on Education, or EDCOM 2, found that most Filipino students demonstrate low proficiency in three essential 21st-century skills: problem-solving, information literacy, and critical thinking. The study warned that these deficiencies could hinder their ability to embrace truth-telling and fact-finding, which are crucial in an era of rampant disinformation. Without these skills, false narratives can easily take precedence over verified facts, further weakening the credibility of information shared on social media.

Social media platforms have become a primary source of news for many, but they are also fertile ground for misinformation. A 2023 report by Gray and Harrison found that about 64.5 percent of people rely on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram for breaking news. However, the absence of strong verification mechanisms allows false information to spread unchecked, eroding public trust. The algorithms on these platforms often prioritize sensational and emotionally charged content, which amplifies misinformation while pushing accurate, verified reports into the background.

The consequences of unchecked misinformation can be dire. Cases of widespread information disorder have been recorded across the Asia-Pacific region, including in Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines, according to multiple media reports. In the Philippines, for example, political disinformation campaigns have repeatedly manipulated public opinion, swaying election results and deepening political divides. Meanwhile, the spread of false information about vaccines, treatments, and preventive health measures has had serious public health consequences, as seen during the Covid-19 pandemic. If left unaddressed, disinformation can pose threats not only to democracy but also to national security.

Fabricated news, where facts are deliberately twisted to protect powerful individuals, presents another serious issue. Journalistic investigations have repeatedly shown how influence, money, and bribery can override truth and justice, crushing the rights of marginalized communities. The impact of such deception extends beyond digital spaces, affecting real-world interactions and contributing to societal fragmentation. A 2018 study by researchers Gordon Pennycook and David Rand highlighted how misinformation not only distorts reality but also fuels social division. Indeed, it is better to confront people with the truth than to comfort them with a lie.

Deception is slowly severing our connection with the world. If left unchecked, the “infodemic” — a term coined by the World Health Organization — may prove deadlier than any future pandemic. The stakes are too high to allow unverified information to spread unchecked.

At the end of the day, the responsibility falls on us to establish evidence-based solutions — not baseless perceptions. Strengthening media literacy, enforcing government regulations, and expanding independent fact-checking initiatives are all critical steps in combating the spread of misinformation. As citizens, we must remain vigilant, fostering a culture of responsible information consumption and truth-driven public discourse. It is time to put an end to the culture of impunity.
