The rapid rise of artificial intelligence is no longer just a distant concept—it’sactively transforming creative industries and directly impacting veteran artists today. When one of the most recognizable broadcasting families in the Philippines experienced this shift firsthand, it brought the ongoing debate over automation, job security, and creative ethics right to the forefront.

When AI Hits Home for a Veteran Voice

The ongoing rise of synthetic speech technology recently hit close to home for a renowned voice-over family. Content creator and voice actor Inka Magnaye publicly voiced her deep frustration, writing,

My heart breaks for all the artists and creatives.”

This reaction came right after her mother, veteran voice talent Lindy Pellicer, unexpectedly lost an upcoming voice-over project to artificial intelligence.

A screenshot of the family group chat thread where 40-year voice-over industry veteran Lindy Pellicer broke the news to her family that an upcoming voice-over gig was given to AI.

In fact, Pellicer broke the news to her family in a group chat, plainly revealing,

I just lost a voice over job to AI.”

Shortly after, her son Renzo Magnaye pointed out that the client’s shift toward automation was likely driven by budget considerations, though the specific brand chose to remain unnamed.

A Legacy Built Behind the Microphones

This sudden change feels especially jarring because the Magnaye-Pellicer family has anchored Philippine broadcasting and commercials for decades. Over her 40-year career, Pellicer lent her iconic voice to major household brands such as Pond’s, Nestlé, and Johnson & Johnson, while also serving as the voice behind Philippine Airlines’ in-flight announcements back in the 1990s. Later on, Inka seamlessly followed in her mother’s footsteps to become one of the voices behind PAL’s in-flight announcements.

Consequently, seeing decades of industry experience sidelined by software highlights just how rapidly the landscape is shifting for seasoned creative professionals.

Protecting the Human Touch in the Age of Tech

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Inka has spoken out about the rising impact of automation in creative fields.

Back in a 2023 interview, she actively stressed the value of the “human element” in voice acting while urging industry leaders to establish clear regulations around AI technology. Ultimately, this situation underscores a major dilemma facing artists everywhere today.

As synthetic speech rapidly advances, creators are left grappling with how technology can coexist with their work without jeopardizing the livelihood, consent, and compensation of real human talent.
