In a ballroom in London, under the warm light of crystal chandeliers, three bottles bearing a Filipino name stood proud.
On June 4, 2025, Destileria Limtuaco, the Philippines’ oldest distillery, made headlines at the World Drinks Awards 2025, taking home multiple honors. For most producers, it was a product win. For the Limpe-Aw family, it marked something deeper: global recognition for a 173-year-old legacy—and the rise of Filipino premium spirits.
From Binondo to the World Stage
The story of Destileria Limtuaco began in 1852, when Chinese immigrant Lim Chay Seng started crafting herbal medicinal wines in Binondo, Manila. Over time, the business grew through upheavals and transitions—colonization, war, dictatorship, and modernization—but it always stayed family-run, rooted in Filipino ingenuity.
By the 1980s, the brand became a household name, known for staples like White Castle Whisky and Maria Clara Sangria. But by the early 2000s, local spirits were being pushed off the shelf by imported liquor brands. Filipino-made products struggled to compete—until the company took a bold turn.
Fifth-generation president Olivia Limpe-Aw launched the Philippine Craft Spirits line, using native ingredients not just for flavor but for storytelling: calamansi, cacao, mango, and barako coffee. It was a deliberate move to put Filipino identity at the forefront of product innovation.
Destileria Limtuaco Awards 2025: Filipino Liqueurs Win Big in London
Leading the celebration was Intramuros Liqueur de Cacao, which claimed the title of World’s Best Chocolate Liqueur. Deep and bittersweet, the liqueur draws from the richness of local cacao and the storied walls of Manila’s old city, distilling memory and history into every sip.
Joining it was Manille Liqueur de Calamansi, awarded Philippine Gold for Fruit Liqueur. Bright, zesty, and unmistakably Filipino, it captures the sharp thrill of calamansi plucked from backyard trees, bottled for the world to taste.

Finally, there was Amadeo Coffee Liqueur, named after the coffee-growing town in Cavite, which received Philippine Gold for Coffee Liqueur. With every pour, it honors the bold, earthy soul of barako—a flavor deeply rooted in local soil, and now recognized on a global stage.
Together, these three spirits didn’t just win medals. They told a story—of place, of palate, and of what it means for Filipino ingredients to be celebrated not just at home, but around the world.

Each product honors a place, an ingredient, and a memory. Intramuros blends local cacao with colonial echoes. Manillecaptures the sharp, sunny hit of backyard calamansi. Amadeo, named after a coffee-growing town in Cavite, pays homage to the bold, earthy notes of barako.
The awards solidified Destileria Limtuaco’s place among the world’s best liquor brands—on their own terms, with Filipino ingredients and Filipino stories.

Family First: A Legacy of Reinvention
Aaron Limpe-Aw, now at the helm of branding and global expansion, grew up inside the business. At ten, he worked shifts in the factory to save up for a bicycle. That early experience grounded him in the production process and shaped his respect for the people behind every bottle.
Now leading the sixth generation, Aaron helps steer the company into international markets. But decisions remain personal. Every new label is reviewed by the family. Every campaign is a collective effort.
“We honor our ancestors not by freezing the past,” Aaron says, “but by continuing their work in a way that stays relevant.”
From Skepticism to Respect
One of the turning points came over two decades ago, with the launch of Paradise Mango Rum Liqueur. Despite its quality, Filipino consumers were hesitant. Imported liquors dominated the “premium” space. Locally made products were often dismissed, no matter how good they were.
Aaron remembers the struggle. “We couldn’t even get buyers to try it,” he recalls. “It was an uphill climb.”
That’s what makes the Destileria Limtuaco awards 2025 moment feel earned. It marks a shift—not just from global judges, but from Filipino consumers who are finally seeing their own products as world-class.
Filipino Spirits, A New Global Category
What was once seen as a novelty has become a new category in the spirits world: Filipino premium liquor. This didn’t exist a decade ago. It exists now because pioneers like Limtuaco kept showing up—with heart, heritage, and flavor.
Today, Destileria Limtuaco doesn’t just export liquor. It exports memory. Taste. Story. Identity. In a global market filled with copycat branding and generic liqueurs, these bottles offer something rare: authenticity.
And as Aaron says, this isn’t just about the past. It’s about the future. “When someone drinks our products, they should taste the story.”
