In this house, we serve star-studded. Behold for a powerful theatrical experience as Theatre Group Asia brings a stellar all-female cast together for its upcoming production. TGA has officially unveiled its powerhouse cast for the upcoming adaptation of Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba, opening in February 2027 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati.
Set in the aftermath of her husband’s death, the oppressive matriarch Bernarda Alba enforces an uncompromising eight-year mourning period, locking away her five daughters to safeguard the family name.
A Star-Studded Cast
Leading the ensemble is Lea Salonga in the titular role of Bernarda Alba, marking her very first time performing an entire theatrical role in Filipino. Joining her is an incredible lineup of iconic women of theater, including Sheila Francisco as María Josefa, Maita Ponce as Angustias, Toni Go-Yadao as Magdalena, Maronne Cruz as Amelia, Mikaela Regis as Martirio, and Gabby Padilla as Adela, alongside household servants played by Frances Makil-Ignacio and Jam Binay.
Staging a Timeless Tragedy to Life
Adapted by Chay Yew from Federico García Lorca’s classic play and translated into Filipino by Guelan Varela-Luarca, the story explores the suffocating grip of a strict matriarch who imposes eight years of mourning on her household following her second husband’s death. Furthermore, as the daughters grapple with their individual desires for freedom, the narrative brilliantly highlights the complex and often contradictory expectations that women face within patriarchal frameworks.
A Timely and Urgent Production
Ultimately, as Lea Salonga explained when reflecting on the production’s profound significance,
They could have picked any other play. But they picked this one, and I think that there is a reason. Because of the themes, because all of the characters are women, and current events necessitate a play like this being staged and produced.”
Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba is scheduled to run from February 11 through March 21, 2027, with ticket tiers ranging from VIP to Reserved seating. With tickets selling out fast, theatergoers are encouraged to secure their seats quickly to witness this historic staging.
