For many of us, we all want to drop everything in corpo and just resort to our passion projects. Isn’t that the point of good living? After all, we all have a calling. And for Malou, it’s the stray paws in need of shelter.
Leaving The Corpo World For Sheltering Dogs
In October 2018, she learned that dogs in a Bacolod city pound were scheduled to be killed by gunshot. Refusing to stand by, Malou Perez stepped up to save these animals on “death row.” Consequently, with hope, courage, and a small group of supporters, she founded Pawssion Project.
What started as an urgent local effort soon grew into a nationwide rescue movement.
Malou has always dreamt of putting up a dog shelter. In a Nutrichunks PH episode where she had to share her rescuer story:
Growing up, I’ve always, always been a dog lover. But i was never really an advocate. When i set foot in the pound, I still can really remember just about how traumatic the experience was. I was standing next to the hole, where they was supposed to be buried.”
Malou even asked,
Why gunshot? Because it’s legal? Because it’s the cheapest way?
Without second thoughts, with no idea on how it would entrail, Malou just said yes to it. Because they were running out of time, she just just went on full committed—she’s going to open her Pawssion Project shelter.
Expanding the Safe Haven for Rescues
As news spread, calls for help poured in from all over. Therefore, to accommodate more animals in need, Pawssion Project Foundation Inc. opened a second shelter in Bulacan in mid-2019. Since then, the non-profit organization has rescued over 3,000 abused, abandoned, and neglected animals. Furthermore, they have successfully rehomed more than 2,000 dogs and cats.
Seeing this life-changing work firsthand deeply moved her family.
Her proud aunt Charito Beltran Colocado shares in a Facebook post,
She has rescued 1000s between her Bulacan and Bacolod based shelters. Saving victims of hit and run, diseases, animal cruelty, to name a few. It was literally Dog Heaven visiting the Balay PAWSsion in Negros Occidental. The love of dogs is very strong in our family.”
How Everyone Can Help Make a Difference
However, the fight against animal cruelty is far larger than what one organization can handle alone. Dogs still face execution in city pounds, and stray populations continue to grow. Fortunately, we all have the power to take action.
For instance, you can help by spreading awareness about animal protection laws like RA8485. In addition, practicing responsible pet ownership and supporting spay-and-neuter initiatives make a lasting impact. Ultimately, whether you choose to adopt, foster, sponsor, volunteer, donate, or advocate, every action brings us closer to achieving the Five Freedoms for all animals.
