Love is rarely a sudden arrival. More often, it is a quiet, continuous choice to learn and be learned. Capturing this exact sentiment, Cebu-born pop artist Jolianne steps into her next musical chapter on the heels of her hit breakthrough single, “Palayo sa Mundo”. Which recently surpassed 70 million streams on Spotify alone. Released via Sony Music Entertainment, her latest track, “Daanan,” marks a major milestone as her very first self-written song in Filipino.
A New Chapter Built on Vulnerability
Rather than framing romance as an instant, perfect spark, the guitar-pop ballad views love as an evolving journey shaped by patience, shared experiences, and gentle timing. The song reflects the solace found in unexpected connections and the willingness to let someone into one’s life.
Daanan is about falling in love for the first time and about having someone gently guide you through your firsts and learning, little by little, to let someone into your life,” Jolianne explains.
It’s about choosing to grow into love instead of rushing toward it and discovering yourself through the eyes of someone who sees you completely.”
She adds that the piece treats romantic affection as something to intentionally cultivate each day.
Sometimes, you don’t know exactly where the road will lead—you just know that you want to keep walking, hand in hand with someone, until you find out together.”
Navigating New Linguistic and Creative Territory
Crafting the track in Filipino required Jolianne to intentionally step outside her usual creative boundaries. Having primarily written in English and Bisaya, writing in Filipino presented an unfamiliar landscape that required her to embrace the mindset of a novice once again.
My comfort languages as a writer are English and Bisaya, so writing in Filipino felt like entering an entirely new space,” she shares.
It made me feel like a beginner all over again. Daanan challenged me to stretch beyond what I already knew, and I’m happy that I allowed myself to be a beginner again.”
This spirit of exploration extended to her musical process as well. The initial composition began as a simple voice note containing only a melody. Devoid of chords or a beat—which diverged from her standard approach to songwriting. Produced by Luke April, the track unfolds organically. Transitioning from a delicate acoustic introduction into a sweeping orchestral arrangement. This mirrors the emotional journey from uncertainty to total surrender.
Translating Motion into Visual Storytelling
The song’s thematic focus on patience and openness is visually illustrated in its accompanying music video. Directed by Raliug and produced alongside Lunchbox, the visual narrative uses dance as a central metaphor for intimacy.
In the video, Jolianne portrays a student taking dance lessons from an instructor she develops feelings for. With the initial awkwardness of learning the movements reflecting the emotional hesitation of opening up to someone new.
I really liked the idea of using dance because there’s something inherently vulnerable about letting another person teach you,” Jolianne notes.
You have to be willing to look a little silly, make mistakes, and trust that they’ll catch you when you get the steps wrong. That became a visual metaphor for the love I’m talking about in the song: you don’t know what you’re doing at first, but you slowly become more comfortable with each other and learn the rhythm together.”
