Indie music veteran Aldus Santos is back with a brand-new project named St. Ruin.

Today, August 14, he officially released his debut single, “Uncool.” The track is now available on major digital streaming platforms via Lilystars Records. Overall, this new release seamlessly blends intimate singer-songwriter storytelling with rich, cinematic soundscapes.

Recalling His Artistry

If Santos’s name sounds familiar, that is because he has been active in music and journalism for years. First, you might know him from the 2000s indie group The Purplechickens or his neo-folk act Pamphleteer. Additionally, he is a well-known music writer who has published work in Rappler, NME, Billboard, and Rolling Stone. Furthermore, his books include Alternate Endings (2020) and The Demo Versions (2022). Most recently, he co-wrote Eraserheads: Combo on the Run, a band documentary that premiered on Netflix in May.

A Filmic Tribute Born from Loss

At its heart, “Uncool” is a personal track written for his only brother, who passed away from cancer in 2023. Santos shares that the song is a love letter to the departed, with

its verb tenses volleying between a pretend present, a protracted past, and a poignant future.”

Musically, Santos leads on vocals, guitar, and harmonica. Meanwhile, bassist Yan Bagay Cruz and drummer Dave Cruz build the rhythm section. To elevate the song further, electronic producer kvtvlv adds synths and atmospheric sound design, turning the track into a filmic experience.

What Lies Ahead for St. Ruin

Importantly, “Uncool” is the lead single off St. Ruin’s upcoming EP, A Cocktail Called Last Word.

“A poet doesn’t stop hurting past a certain age.” — Aldus Santos on launching St. Ruin.

Santos describes the full project as “a grief journal in audio.” Slated for release in October, the EP marks his first recorded output since Pamphleteer’s 2022 release, Two Novellas. Moreover, it is his debut under Lilystars Records. Reflecting on launching a new alter-ego later in life, Santos takes it in stride.

You’d think it would be weird to get back on the horse and put out new music and launch a new alter-ego in your 40s…but not really,”

Santos says, laughing.

A poet doesn’t stop hurting past a certain age.”

In summary, “Uncool” sets a compelling and emotional tone for St. Ruin’s upcoming record. As a result, fans of thoughtful indie music have plenty to look forward to.

You can stream the debut single today on all major music platforms ahead of the full EP this October.
