In the radiant world of international pageantry, where each detail weaves a legacy, one Filipino designer has emerged as the creator behind some of the industry’s most iconic triumphs.
Rian Fernandez has risen as one of the Philippines’ most coveted couture designers.
His creations go beyond fashion, transforming into emblems of victory, identity, and empowerment. His gowns have shone on the world’s grandest stages. Queens have vied for his signature craftsmanship, a harmonious synthesis of detailed couture, striking silhouettes, and Filipino artistry.
For Fernandez, an evening gown is never simply an elegant garment; it is a living story, woven into reality. Every creation starts with the woman who will wear it. Her personality, advocacy, and journey spark symbolic motifs, curated color palettes, and hand-placed embellishments.

From Pangasinan to the World Arena
Growing up in Alcala, Pangasinan, Fernandez unearthed his passion for costume design while studying Communication Arts at Saint Louis University in Baguio City. The magic of theater awakened his fondness for storytelling through clothing, molding the heart of his couture philosophy.
To hone his artistry, he studied advanced fashion studies at LaSalle College of the Arts in Singapore and joined the ASEAN Fashion Designers Council. In 2012, he brought his vision into existence by founding Rian Fernandez Atelier, which grew into a global couture house.
The Gown That Claimed the Universe
Fernandez’s defining international breakthrough arrived at Miss Universe 2022, when Filipino-American queen R’Bonney Gabriel commanded the stage in his dramatic black velvet masterpiece during the finals.
The gown featured gunmetal accents, reflective glass mirrors, black onyx embellishments, cascading fringe, and blue Swarovski crystals. Every element carried deliberate symbolism: black represented competence; gunmetal represented resilience; mirror drops reflected self-discovery; and sapphire-blue crystals symbolized empowered women.
Earlier in the competition, Gabriel wore Fernandez’s Viva Magenta preliminary gown—a halter-neck trumpet silhouette with a detachable cape celebrating courage and harmony.
For her farewell walk at the 72nd Miss Universe in El Salvador, Gabriel once more chose Fernandez, donning a fiery crimson serpentine gown which celebrated transformation and strength. The sculptural creation further secured Fernandez’s legacy for championship-winning style.
Breaking Boundaries in Thailand
In 2024, Fernandez made history as the first international designer to craft the winning evening gown for Miss Universe Thailand.
For titleholder Opal Suchata, he designed an off-the-shoulder trumpet gown inspired by Bangkok’s artistic heritage. Hand-embroidered with glass crystals, the radiant gold-and-silver gown showcased a symbolic ribbon detail honoring breast cancer survivors, a sincere tribute to Suchata’s advocacy.
After this historic victory, Fernandez hailed the achievement as a triumph for his entire team of artisans, underscoring that true craftsmanship knows no borders.
Dressing Champions Around the World
At Miss Eco International 2025, winner Alexie Brooks dazzled in a Fernandez creation which celebrated Filipino craftsmanship through a modern take on the traditional solihiya weave.
Adorned with delicate crystals, the gown seamlessly fused indigenous design with contemporary luxury.
For Miss Grand International 2025, he created a fiery orange phoenix-inspired gown for Emma Tiglao.
Layers of feathers, crystals, sequins, and glass beads turned the piece into a marvel of dancing flames, embodying rebirth and ambition. Watching Tiglao seize the crown represented a defining milestone within his career.
A year later, Fernandez celebrated another global triumph with Miss Supranational 2026 winner Katrina Llegado.
Inspired by sunrise, the ombré gown melted from warm amber to golden yellow and soft violet, enhanced with intricate beadwork and a dramatic sheer sleeve, radiating confidence and fortitude.
A Legacy Written in Crowns
Today, Fernandez stands tall among the Philippines’ most influential designers. His gowns have become associated with excellence, bearing the artistry of Filipino hands and the conviction that fashion can empower and unite across borders.
