The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), led by business magnate Manuel V. Pangilinan, has joined forces with animal welfare organizations to advocate for the humane treatment of animals. Through various programs and initiatives, the company seeks to promote a more compassionate and responsible society for animals in need.
As part of its 122nd founding anniversary celebration, Meralco hosted its inaugural animal welfare seminar, denoting a crucial step in its ongoing campaign to promote awareness and action on animal welfare issues.
Dubbed “Powering Compassion: CATropa and kaBARKada Unite,” the event brought together more than 150 advocates, including city veterinarians, representatives from animal welfare organizations, and Meralco employees. The seminar served as a platform to discuss pressing animal welfare concerns, share best practices, and encourage collaborative efforts to protect and support stray and domesticated animals.
Key speakers included Anna Cabrera, executive director of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), and Rina Ortiz, president and co-founder of Biyaya Animal Care. Both speakers underscored the urgent need for rescue, adoption, and community-driven solutions to animal welfare issues.
In her presentation, Cabrera discussed the distinction between animal care and animal welfare in the Philippines. She highlighted the profound impact of adoption and rescue efforts on both animals and humans, advocating for increased support and awareness.
“If you give animals a chance, they show us the very best aspects of our humanity. They have so much love to give. I hope we can love them back, especially those who are homeless, helpless, and voiceless,” Cabrera said.
Meanwhile, Ortiz highlighted the trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) program as a humane and effective approach to managing the stray animal population. She also pointed out the critical role of responsible pet ownership and community engagement in ensuring a safer and healthier environment for both animals and humans.
Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco’s vice president and head of corporate communications, restated the company’s dedication to extending its corporate social responsibility beyond energy-related initiatives.
“Our treatment of animals reflects who we are as a people. Let us choose kindness and responsibility because we protect our future by protecting them,” Zaldarriaga said.
He reasserted that Meralco remains committed to supporting spay and neuter programs, which help control the stray animal population and promote healthier communities.
The success of Meralco’s animal welfare advocacy event was made possible through the support of various organizations. These partnerships drive meaningful initiatives that champion compassion, responsible pet ownership, and a safer environment for animals across the country.
