Recently, there has been a buzz around how Filipino designers styled Met, showcasing their unique talent and creativity at one of the most prestigious fashion events.
Every first Monday of May, the world’s most iconic staircase transforms into fashion’s most coveted runway. But what if the dreams walking down it were stitched by Filipino hands? It would be mesmerizing to witness Filipino designers styling the Met.
Since 1948, the Met Gala—officially the Costume Institute Ball—has taken place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Hosted by Vogue magazine, it remains the most exclusive and influential night in fashion, drawing cultural powerhouses from film, music, sports, politics, and beyond, and now imagine how stunning it would be if designs at the Met were styled by the talent of Filipino designers.
This year’s gala was held on May 5, 2025, launching the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which runs from May 10 to October 26. The show explores Black identity through tailoring—spanning centuries of garments, accessories, paintings, and cultural expression.
Inspired by this theme, I couldn’t help but imagine: what if Filipino creativity met this global stage? Picture the craftsmanship that could style the Met looks captured by Filipino designers at such an esteemed event.
As a Filipino fashion designer, I’ve often dreamed of seeing one of my creations on the Met steps. So I asked fellow creatives to dream with me—to imagine Met Gala moments shaped by local hands, global icons, and a shared love for detail.
Here’s where fantasy meets fabric, embodying the achievements of skilled Filipino designers, who could style Met ensembles with poise and flair.
CELEBRITY: Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief, Vogue
DESIGNER: Dong Omaga-Diaz
Let me begin with my own vision. As a designer known for precision tailoring and theatrical flair, I would dress Anna Wintour—the undisputed queen of fashion—in a bold reinterpretation of timeless elegance.
Picture this: a sharply tailored black velvet jacket, fastened with a single pearl clasp at the waist. From behind, a sweeping train of soft white tulle flows, light as air yet deliberate in movement. The look balances structure with softness, classic with contemporary—a tribute to the enduring power of tailoring.

CELEBRITY: Nicole Kidman, Actress
DESIGNER: Cherry Veric
Cherry Veric, celebrated for his red-carpet grandeur and dramatic silhouettes, channels three words for Nicole: drama, chic, and oomph. He imagines her in a sweeping high-slit mini dress in sheer midnight blue—cinched at the waist and traced with crystal beadwork that sculpts a silhouette fit for fashion royalty. Its bold elegance: daring yet refined. Masculine details meet feminine form in a striking harmony of strength and sensuality.

CELEBRITY: Vera Wang, Fashion Designer
DESIGNER: JohnJohn Ditching
Known as the king of Negros haute couture, JohnJohn Ditching is celebrated for his meticulous craftsmanship and narrative-driven designs. For Vera Wang, he imagines a serpentine gown crowned with a pearl-studded bodice, subtly layered beneath a sharply tailored overbustier.
Along the hem, cabbage roses bloom in varied sizes—each one hand-formed to echo softness and strength. The look plays with contrasts: romantic yet structured, fluid yet bold. It’s a poetic study in balance—of masculine and feminine, tradition and edge—all seen through a perspective where Met moments are styled by Filipino designers.

CELEBRITY: Diana Ross, Legendary Songstress
DESIGNER: Edgar San Diego
Philippine couture icon Edgar San Diego brings decades of artistry to this imagined look for Diana Ross. He envisions a sleek tuxedo-style bodice that flares into soft layers of silk organza—an elegant fusion of sharp tailoring and ethereal movement.
A bold crimson cabbage rose blooms on the lapel, perfectly poised to echo the volume of her iconic curls. The result channels timeless diva energy, honoring the legacy of Black glamour while spotlighting Filipino craftsmanship at its most refined, as if the Met were styled by Filipino designers. Their talent showcases such flair.

That concludes our trip to fashion fantasy land. Dream boldly — and work harder. Someday, it might just be your creation on the steps of the Met.
Till then, remain fabulous, dearest ones…
