The ocean has always been humanity’s great equalizer. A borderless, powerful common that belongs to no single nation, yet demands cooperation from everyone who dares to cross it.

It is fitting that the newest movement for international harmony isn’t taking place at a diplomatic summit, but beneath the waves. With its upcoming inauguration in the historic port of Manila, the Villa Vie Odyssey is officially stepping into history as the world’s first Global Flagship of Peace.

A Historic Inauguration

This historic inauguration ceremony will take place in Manila, Philippines, on June 8, 2026. Establishing deep ties back to San Diego, California. Ultimately, the event serves as the maiden voyage for an international maritime initiative focused on cultural exchange, peace building, global cooperation, education, and environmental awareness.

The initiative itself was co-founded by Oceanside resident Dr. Joanne Tawfilis. Who also co-founded the Art Miles Mural Project, and Barbara Figiel, a member of the Villa Vie Odyssey. Together, they will board the vessel to witness its official dedication as a global messenger that will carry a message of harmony from port to port across the globe.

Reflecting on the urgency of the mission, Filipino-American co-founder Dr. Joanne Tawfilis remarked,

Peace and cooperation are needed now more than ever. The Odyssey represents something deeply meaningful. A living platform where people from around the world can come together not only to travel, but to help inspire understanding, compassion, and peace wherever the ship sails.”

A Unified Ring for International Harmony Across Oceans

The inaugural ceremony will commence on the morning of June 8 on the bow of the Villa Vie Odyssey. With Guy Djoken, the president and CEO of the U.S. Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations, officiating the proceedings. At exactly 10:00 a.m. Manila time, the ship’s captains will symbolically strike the vessel’s bell. Simultaneously, peace bells situated both onshore and abroad will ring out in unison to call for global harmony.

Because of the time zone difference, this synchronized chime will resonate in the San Diego region on June 7 at 7:00 p.m. PST. Specifically echoing from the Yokohama Friendship Bell on Shelter Island and the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. Furthermore, Lorna De La Cruz, a charter member of San Diego’s acclaimed choir, Voices of Our City, will introduce the Young Voices of the Philippines at the port side ceremonies. Where the youth ensemble will perform the national anthem alongside an uplifting song.

Cultural Celebrations and Global Sustainability Goals

Following the launch, the week’s festivities will feature a keynote address by Dr. Maria Victoria “Marivic” T. Lualhati. Who was previously honored by the Filipina Women’s Network as one of the Most Influential Filipinas in the World. In addition to the shipboard events, cultural celebrations will spread into Manila’s historic districts, including the centuries-old walled city of Intramuros. One of the most treasured cultural heritage sites in the Philippines, and the historic San Agustin Church. Throughout these gatherings, the scheduled programming will highlight grassroots initiatives that align directly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Artistic Collaborations Honoring World Oceans Day

In line with the launch and in recognition of World Oceans Day on June 8, the organization will honor renowned Filipino muralist Rolando DeLeon for his extraordinary 4.5-mile mural installation titled Fishes of the Ocean. This massive artwork is slated to find a permanent home at the Jose Rizal Memorial State University; previously, a segment of the piece was showcased in California during the 2015 Balboa Park Centennial Philippine-American Celebration.

Looking forward, DeLeon and the Global Flagship of Peace will partner with the Tahanan ng Pagmamahal Children’s Home. Together, they will engage local youth in creating inspirational murals centered around themes of hope and peace.

Through these combined efforts, the community on board has fully integrated the mission into their journey. Residents of the Villa Vie Odyssey have collectively embraced the initiative, sharing the core belief,

We are not just traveling the world; we are helping shape and build peace along the way.”
