Art can be of many forms and practices.

One to fuse all is that we create to tell a story.

But for Pamela Maceda, it’s the raw act of reclaiming.

As a visual artist and graduate of UP Diliman Fine Arts, Pamela uses painting, installations, and sculpture to champion the domestic truths of class struggle and the Filipina experience.

Now, Pamela dwells on the concept of a re-injured wound—focusing deeply on themes of nakedness and shrinking. On her latest art show “Wala(t), Pamela Maceda refills her experience as a woman in a sprightly canvas.

Mula Sa Babae, Para Sa Babae

Because so many historical depictions of the female body were created by men, Pamela wants to change that narrative.

“Mula sa babae, para sa babae.” Artist Pamela Maceda alongside her work, reclaiming the female narrative through raw, visceral visual storytelling.

Pamela expresses her advocacy on wanting to bring female struggles, victories, and taboos directly to the canvas, stating,

Gusto kong ibida, o ipakilala yung struggles, yung winnings. Mga taboo na alam mong babae lang yung nakakaranas into the canvas.”

She actively incorporates her perspective as a woman, explaining,

Yung punto de vista ng isang babae sa lipunan na ginalawan natin, sa art scene, sa industry, sa community, gusto ko na maidescribe sya into something na kayang idigest ng mga tao”.

Consequently, she positions herself as a storyteller who speaks directly to women, proudly quoting,

Mula sa babae, para sa babae.

She views the human body not just as a subject, but as a visceral, beautiful, and sometimes terrifying medium.

For Pamela, bringing this honesty to her work is essential.

Nuance Is Where The Voice Is

However, starting out as an artist is rarely easy, especially coming from the provinces.

Reflecting on her roots in Aurora and Batangas, she reminds fellow creators that support is out there, noting,

Kailangan lang natin talagang gumawa at hanapin yung boses na gusto natin iparinig sa audience”.

Growing up around a busy fish market in Batangas heavily shaped her early work, proving that an artist’s surroundings play a huge role in their voice.

Therefore, she urges young creatives to step out of the classroom and share their work with the world. This human touch is exactly what keeps her confident, even in the age of generative AI.

In fact, she believes AI can never truly replicate the visible, emotional process of a human creator, explaining,

Malalaman mo kung saan sya bumabagal, kung saan sya bumibilis”.

At the end of the day, she is certain that people will always seek real connection because, as she puts it, people will always subscribe to what is true.

Body Is The Archive

In a world that often tries to shrink women’s experiences, Pamela’s art stands as a bold refusal to stay quiet.

Pamela Maceda takes on the female body that serves as a powerful devise for archiving.

By using the female body as both a canvas and a medium, she turns what has historically been objectified into a powerful confrontation.

Ultimately, her work reminds us that handmade art carries an irreplaceable human truth—one that is visceral, honest, and beautifully unfiltered.

The Wala(t) exhibition runs until August 31, 2026 in KalawakanSpacetime, at the Mezzanine of the Casa Bella Building, Quezon City.
