Health is often something we think about only when we feel unwell. But what if caring for ourselves begins long before we need a doctor? This question took center stage during the 11th International Ayurveda Day celebration on September 23, 2026, bringing together practitioners, advocates, and health representatives to discuss Ayurveda’s role in promoting well-being.

With the theme “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow,” the gathering highlighted preventive care, mindful living, and collaboration between traditional practices and modern medicine.

Beyond Medicine: A Science of Life

“We don’t look at the persons with the numbers. We talk about the person’s life,” George explained, emphasizing the importance of understanding people’s habits and circumstances.

Originating in India, Ayurveda is understood as the science of life. It considers how daily routines, diet, sleep, and emotional well-being contribute to a person’s overall health.

For Dr. Gibsy Sanjeevi George, an Ayurvedic doctor with Shanti Ayurveda Philippines, this approach encourages people to look beyond symptoms and understand their lifestyles.

“We don’t look at the persons with the numbers. We talk about the person’s life,” George explained, emphasizing the importance of understanding people’s habits and circumstances. He also highlighted the importance of recognizing early signs of discomfort. As he put it, “Body whispers before it shouts.”

Finding Wellness in Everyday Life

For Ally Apple Allyson, founder of Soul Searching Sole and Wellness Experience Director of NaHeal, discovering Ayurveda became part of her journey toward understanding herself, her culture, and her well-being.

Her travels to India helped her recognize similarities between Indian and Filipino traditions, particularly their connection to nature and the value of slowing down.

She recalled seeing people sit by riversides, breathe, and enjoy their surroundings. These experiences reminded her that wellness is not limited to treating illness; it also involves making time for reflection and rest.

Her message to the Simpol Pips is simple: “Huminga ka, magpahinga ka.” Breathe and rest.

Bringing Healthcare Together

The celebration also emphasized collaboration between Ayurveda and modern medicine.

The celebration also emphasized collaboration between Ayurveda and modern medicine. Rather than treating them as competing systems, speakers encouraged approaches that prioritize patient well-being while maintaining standards for safety and evidence.

“We have to look at it as a collaboration,” George said, recognizing the distinct contributions of different medical practices.

In the Philippines, the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Healthcare (PITAHC) expressed support for evidence-informed traditional healthcare while acknowledging challenges involving regulation, standardized training, and product quality.

Its partnership with India’s National Institute of Ayurveda, formalized through a memorandum of understanding on April 19, 2018, reflects ongoing efforts to encourage knowledge exchange.

Wellness for Everyone

Through her work with NaHeal, Allison advocates making wellness accessible to more communities.

“Because we believe that wellness is for everyone,” she said.

Ultimately, Ayurveda Day offered an opportunity to rethink how people approach health. Through mindful habits, responsible healthcare, and community support, wellness becomes more than a response to illness. It becomes a daily practice that benefits individuals, families, and the wider community.
