The asian music scene is buzzing with excitement over a new creative wave of genres.

After a meaningful two-year hiatus to reflect and recharge, Golden Melody Award-winning artist Shi Shi has officially made her comeback.

She’s channeling all of her personal growth into a brand-new project.

While she typically commands the mandopop, contemporary R&B, and soul landscapes, this release stretches her musical boundaries further than before.

The Taste of…

This exciting comeback centers around her new EP titled The Taste Of….

The project beautifully mirrors the emotional rollercoaster she rode during her break. Reflecting on this journey, Shi Shi shares,

During this period, I experienced a wide range of emotions, from the sweet ones to the bitter ones, and even some moments that were sour or spicy!

It is hard to describe the feelings we feel every day using merely our words, but sometimes they can be expressed and digested in a song.”

To elevate the musical craftsmanship, she brought together a spectacular lineup of global producers. This team includes K-pop producer parkhyeon, Different Sleep, and Latin Grammy-winner Andrø Pop.

Furthermore, this release marks a massive milestone as her first-ever English-based EP.

By curating English, Mandarin, and Korean, the record acts as a proud nod to her South Korean roots.

It also serves as a bold first step onto the international stage.

On Tteokbokki And Friendships

Among the various tracks, the two songs featuring Korean lyrics stand out.

They offer the most gentle and intimate moments for listeners.

In particular, the track ‘Tteokbokki’ sees Shi Shi breaking away from her usual relationship themes.

Instead, she explores the comforting world of  “food memories.”

Golden Melody Award-winner Shi Shi reflects on cherished memories of youth and food in her first English-based EP.

For Shi Shi, the traditional spicy Korean rice cake isn’t just a familiar snack. It serves as a powerful symbol of youth. The dish reminds her of walking home after school. It also brings back the warm atmosphere of the eateries where she hung out with her closest friends.

She collaborated with Chinese American producer Morrison Ma (MOSUN) to bring a distinct retro feeling to this gentle song. She even opened the track with self-recorded audio from a busy Korean market.

This slice-of-life sound instantly pulls the audience into the atmosphere.

Rekindling On-Screen Chemistry

Consequently, this theme of lifelong friendship carries over beautifully into the official music video. In the video, Shi Shi happily reunites with her old friend, actress Lee Jung-Min.

A tribute to lifelong friendship: Golden Melody Award-winner Shi Shi joins forces with best friend Lee Jung-Min to bring food memories and youth to life.

Two bestfriends who hadn’t actually met in person for 16 years.

However, they always kept in touch over the years.

Their natural chemistry absolutely shines in their very first professional collaboration. Similarly to their real-life bond, they play childhood friends catching up at their old local eatery.

Ultimately, this project highlights the grand ambitions of the Taiwan-based singer-songwriter. As a third-generation South Korean-Chinese artist, she previously won massive acclaim for her hit drama theme ‘Someday or One Day’.

Now, she continues to pave the way for her next international era.

The Taste Of… serves as a powerful testament to Shi Shi’s evolving artistry.

With nostalgia crossing international borders, she invites everyone to share in her deeply personal reflections.

As Shi Shi herself beautifully sums it up:

In this EP, each track is like a unique cocktail, bringing a different flavour and taste profile, and a different composition of ingredients and emotions. I hope my listeners can savour each one of them!”

Take this as a sign to tap your long term friend, miles away or just near the block.

And maybe take a listen to Shi Shi’s new EP The Taste Of… while catching up at your fave merienda spot.
