Recently, classic discourse in the local film industry has resurfaced. Many cite piracy as a major threat to filmmakers and producers. However, this conversation has been around for a very long time. In fact, even Lav Diaz believes that piracy acts as a movement within the country’s film industry. Ultimately, one can argue that piracy is simply a distribution problem. Clearly, Philippine cinema still has a long way to go before it becomes fully accessible. As founder of We.Live Media Laurence De Vera notes,
Culture shouldn’t exist only for those who can afford it”
Consequently, his initiative to open a call for submissions in Bulacan sparked a passionate response. The eligibility rules are deliberately simple. Specifically, you only need to be born and reside in Bulacan.
Without complex categories or hurdles, artists are free to just create.
WeLive.Media: Street Culture And Local Art
WeLive.Media originally started as founder Laurence De Vera’s outlet for his personal media projects. As the twin company of indie brand TODAY WE LIVE, it eventually evolved into an independent media company. Specifically, it focused on covering street culture and the local rap scene. For instance, early posts featured music videos and segments like “Blooming Misfits” to showcase homegrown Bulacan talent.
Over the years, the founder and his collaborators found their path in filmmaking. As a result, WeLive grew into an independent production company.
