Great bars don’t always require massive budgets or sprawling hotel footprints. Sometimes, culture is shaped most powerfully right in the neighborhood. This is the truth at the heart of Mius, the independent Hong Kong cocktail sanctuary founded by Shelley Tai.
An Industry-wide Admiration and Achievement
Shelley Tai, the founder of Hong Kong’s Mius, has won the prestigious Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award 2026—the sole peer-judged accolade in the Asia’s 50 Best Bars program. Specifically, bartenders representing the venues on the 2026 list exclusively cast the votes to determine the winner.
Notably, organizers released this announcement as part of a series of special awards ahead of the live ceremony for Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026, sponsored by Perrier. Ultimately, the main event will take place on July 28 at Wynn Palace in Macau.
In essence, this specific honor celebrates an individual who has made a profound, positive impact on the cocktail community through exceptional hospitality, industry leadership, and dedication to the craft.
From Accidental Bartender to Regional Icon
For Tai, this milestone crowns a career that began almost by chance at the age of twenty—a time when she “just needed a job and bartending looked really fun and cool.” From there, she went on to hone her skills at acclaimed venues such as FINDS and Quinary, eventually earning the title of Diageo World Class Competition 2019 HK & Macau Bartender of the Year.
Subsequently, this pivotal achievement paved the way for her role as Operations Director at Singapore’s Nutmeg & Clove, which ultimately secured the No. 24 spot on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025 and No. 50 on The World’s 50 Best Bars 2025.
Crafting Simple Things, Done Well
Following a successful five-year tenure in Singapore, Tai returned home to Hong Kong to establish Mius, an independent neighborhood cocktail bar built around her philosophy of “simple things, done well.” By rejecting pure spectacle in favor of meticulous craftsmanship, she designed a menu that offers reimagined classics, refined house signatures, and most importantly, one of the city’s most thoughtfully curated grower-champagne selections.
Among the standout offerings, she serves a Highball entirely without ice to maintain its clarity and texture. Similarly, the menu features a bright Garibaldi elevated by house techniques, alongside the Dirty Margarita—a subtle, savory take that skillfully combines tequila, fennel pollen, olive, gentian, and lime.
By stripping each drink down to its essential components, Tai proves that restraint can be just as powerful as innovation. Consequently, Mius has rapidly gained recognition within the local bar community for its elegant simplicity and hospitality-first ethos, where every detail of service and staff training balances genuine care with technical precision.
Leadership and Community Praise
Beyond her work behind the bar, Tai is highly regarded for her mentorship and advocacy across the regional hospitality industry. Her extensive, cross-market experience in both Hong Kong and Singapore. Paired with a calm and disciplined leadership style, has established her as a vital role model for rising professionals.
Reflecting on the honor, Shelley Tai, founder of Mius, shared:
I’m truly honoured to receive this recognition, especially among a community of experienced bartenders whose craft I deeply respect. I’m also grateful for the Mius team I get to work with every day.”
Their support, talent and dedication make this kind of moment possible. I hope I can be a role model in return, and inspire others in our community the way so many of you have inspired me.” she added.
Industry leaders quickly echoed praise for her impact. Emma Sleight, Director of Content & Creative for Asia’s 50 Best Bars, noted:
Shelley represents a new wave of hospitality leadership in Asia—she has demonstrated how neighbourhood bars can shape culture just as powerfully as large-scale institutions.”
Evelyn Choi, Head of Portfolio Growth APAC for Pernod Ricard, also expressed pride in Tai’s achievements:
I’m incredibly proud to celebrate Shelley Tai, founder of Mius, as the winner of the Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award at Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026.”
As a fellow Hong Konger, it is especially meaningful to see Shelley recognised by her peers for the passion, creativity and genuine hospitality she brings to the industry—a true reflection of the spirit and talent that continue to shape our bar community.” she added.
Anticipation Builds for Macau
The excitement surrounding the special awards will culminate in the live ceremony for Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026, sponsored by Perrier. During the ceremony, organizers will reveal the region’s final rankings and name The Best Bar in Asia 2026.
Furthermore, this year’s official program features the Bartenders’ Feast, which highlights Macau’s diverse food and beverage scene, as well as Meet the Bartenders, an exclusive roundtable session for the media.
