There was a time when Indian food in Manila felt like discovery—bold curries, long-simmered gravies, the comfort of naan torn by hand. Today, it is no longer unfamiliar. It is part of the city’s dining vocabulary.

What is changing now is not accessibility but refinement.
Early this January, Agni by Mantra quietly opened at the ground floor of Comuna in Makati. The 26-seat space is the latest concept from restaurateur Ranjit Chimni, the force behind Mantra Indian Kitchen & Bar.

If Mantra built familiarity, Agni explores precision.
Named after the Hindi word for “fire,” Agni signals transformation. The menu draws from India’s regional depth—Awadhi galouti kebab from Lucknow, lamb shank nihari simmered slowly until tender, and a smoked interpretation of butter chicken that respects tradition while gently shifting its expression. House-ground masalas and organic produce anchor the flavors. The approach is modern but not ornamental.

There is restraint here.
The plating feels considered. The room—refined yet unpretentious—allows conversation. Cocktails, wine, and Indian single-malt whiskies are curated to complement rather than compete. At 26 seats and reservation only, the scale suggests intention over volume.
Agni does not attempt to redefine Indian cuisine in Manila. Instead, it presents it with clarity—regional, rooted, and thoughtfully expressed.
