We’ve all had the moment: you’re choosing a gift, and someone says, “Local na lang.” It’s a reminder that Filipino brands deserve more space in our choices. Truly, Filipino brands deserve space in our hearts and markets.

It sounds practical, even patriotic—but also a little apologetic. As if imported is the standard, and Filipino-made is the fallback. But in reality, Filipino brands deserve recognition and space like any other.

Last week in Makati, something gently pushed back against that mindset, affirming that Filipino brands deserve significant space in mainstream retail.

The Department of Trade and Industry opened the Bagong Pilipinas MSME Hub—a permanent Filipino MSME retail space inside the Filinvest Building. There was no spectacle. Instead, there was quiet pride—the kind that comes from knowing this is overdue: Filipino products displayed not as alternatives, but as contenders that deserve space.

Shelves featuring regional products highlight the store’s mission to elevate Filipino craftsmanship, aligning with DTI’s advocacy for wider market visibility.

An Easier Path for Small Businesses

For years, Filipino entrepreneurs—especially those from the regions—have struggled to enter mainstream retail. Rent is steep. Networks are limited. Scaling too fast can sink a business.

This Hub offers a different path.

Here, MSMEs can place their products in an established retail environment without crushing overhead. They can observe consumer behavior, test pricing, and gather real sales data. They can learn before risking everything.

It’s not a showcase. It’s a runway designed to ensure Filipino brands deserve their space.

A curated lineup of locally produced goods stands at the center of the store’s concept, reflecting standards supported by DTI for promoting homegrown quality.

A Store Designed With Intention

Inside, the space feels curated—not crowded. Every item sits with dignity: woven bags, stoneware, coconut innovations, Halal-certified products, small-batch food, home goods, and beautifully made pieces from communities across the country.

Nothing looks like a souvenir.

Everything looks like it belongs in a modern Filipino home.

Nearby, Auro Café anchors the experience with chocolate, coffee, and quiet seating. People stay longer. They look closer. They ask where items come from—and who made them.

And so, shopping becomes a connection, proving that Filipino brands indeed deserve space.

Displays of locally sourced items underscore the growing movement encouraged by DTI to strengthen domestic industries through thoughtful retail placement.

A Vision With National Ambition

Assistant Secretary Nylah Bautista framed the purpose clearly:

“This space is part of a larger ecosystem. It helps us produce, create, and innovate—not just participate.”

The plan is to rotate products, highlight regional showcases, and eventually replicate this model nationwide—connecting it with the strengthened OTOP network and building a reliable market-access structure for Filipino MSMEs.

The goal isn’t to build one strong store.

It’s to change the system and ensure that Filipino brands rightly deserve their space.

Neatly arranged product selections demonstrate the store’s commitment to showcasing Filipino brands in a manner consistent with DTI’s vision for MSME development.

Why It Matters

Buying Filipino isn’t just patriotic—it’s practical. When small businesses thrive, communities earn. Jobs grow. Pride grows.

A strong economy doesn’t start with giant corporations. It starts with someone who makes something good—and a society willing to value it.

Maybe the shift begins with us: browsing differently, choosing differently, seeing differently.

Maybe “local” won’t be the second option.

Maybe it will be the choice that feels right.

The Bagong Pilipinas MSME Hub is open Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM in Filinvest Makati, further proof that Filipino brands deserve significant space. Visit, explore, sip chocolate, and discover new Filipino favorites.

Sometimes change doesn’t look like a headline.

Sometimes it looks like a shelf—finally filled with us and proving that Filipino brands deserve space.
