I’ve always thought of steak restaurants as ideal date places—the kind that impress: Dim lighting, dark wood paneling, crisp white tablecloths, shelves lined with wines from around the world and more importantly, good quality steak.

Growing up, dining out with my family gave me the chance to enjoy premium cuts of meat and educate my young palate about good steaks.  Back then, we always ordered the T-bone or tenderloin. But many Filipinos like myself seem to prefer the ribeye—richer, juicier, and full of flavor.

Birthdays and graduations were often celebrated at Casa Marcos, a Spanish restaurant known for its steaks. My dad was a regular, and the staff always welcomed us with their signature iced tea and that unforgettable garlic-infused sauce. Everything just  felt right. It was where I learned not only to love steak, but also how to appreciate the kind of service that made every visit feel special.

Now, with the arrival of Longhorn Steakhouse in Manila, that familiar feeling comes rushing back.

Longhorn, One of the Most Welcoming Steakhouses in a Vibrant City

Lately, Metro Manila’s dining scene has seen a steady rise in international steakhouses—some flashy, others more grounded.

Bespoke steakhouses don’t come cheap—and maybe that’s exactly why they’ve always been my favorite kind of date place, but could be a bit too luxurious for a casual dinner. So when Longhorn Steakhouse opened a few weeks ago, I didn’t hesitate. It’ seemed like the perfect place for an impromptu steak date.  So, I called my favorite girl and asked if she’d join me for a steak dinner. She said yes right away.

Longhorn, located on the ground floor of Shangri-La Plaza in Mandaluyong, is one of the city’s newer players—and it strikes that rare balance: Southern-inspired charm paired with a relaxed, quietly confident atmosphere. Nothing pretentious. Just well-executed steak and thoughtful service.

It doesn’t try too hard to be the best steakhouse in Manila, Philippines. It doesn’t have to. There’s a calm assurance the moment you walk through its doors—like the place knows exactly what it’s doing, and isn’t out to prove anything.

It’s perfect for a casual dinner date—impressive without trying too hard to impress.

Arriving Early for the Best Moments at This Steakhouse
I arrived a little before five—early enough to catch the calm before the dinner rush. The place was serene. Staff were being briefed, music was soft, and I found myself a spot at the bar. I ordered a strawberry-basil mocktail—tart, refreshing, and surprisingly elegant. There’s something special about being in a delightful steakhouse right before it comes alive. There’s a rhythm to that quiet—the air thick with anticipation—and I’ve always liked slipping in before the noise of the Longhorn steakhouse in bustling Manila.

My date was running late, so I went ahead and ordered for both of us. I started with the Strawberry Pecan Salad, which came in a generous bowl of crisp greens, mandarin oranges, crumbled feta, and toasted pecans, all brightened by a tangy vinaigrette. It was exactly the kind of salad you hope to get at such a lovely steakhouse—fresh, lively, with just enough sweetness and acidity to open up the appetite at this Manila Philippines venue.

Then came the Wild West Shrimp. This dish came highly recommended and it delivered. The shrimp were perfectly fried—no shells, thank you—tossed in a mix of garlic butter and spicy cherry peppers. They came with ranch dressing on the side, but honestly, I didn’t bother. They were that good straight out of the plate—bold, savory, and more addictive with every bite. I sat there, happy and unhurried, knowing we were off to a great start at this clever steakhouse situated in Manila, among other notable steakhouses such as Longhorn’s.

When my date finally arrived, flushed from her traffic ordeal, I ordered us two glasses of Cabernet and toasted to her “freedom.” By that time, the restaurant had filled up. Tables were now buzzing with couples, families, even a few birthday groups. The staff, who had already impressed me with their calm and focus during setup, were now moving with fluid, smiling precision. It was the kind of service that felt genuinely warm—not overly scripted, not rushed.

We didn’t take long to settle on our main dish. The Outlaw Ribeye practically called out from the menu: a 20-ounce, bone-in, fire-grilled behemoth, thick-cut and proudly marbled. When it arrived at the table, I knew we were in for something special. The crust was gloriously seared, the inside juicy and pink. With every slice, you could taste the balance of char and fat, pepper and salt. This was a steak that didn’t try too hard—it simply delivered. We tried, but we couldn’t finish it. And that, to me, is always a good sign. A steak worth wrapping up and taking home means it gave more than it needed to at the long-established steakhouse in Manila.

We did order dessert—a Chocolate Lava Cake—but the story there is short: she finished it. Every bite. I was still too caught up in the ribeye afterglow to notice. But it was the kind of ending that made perfect sense to the evening. Sometimes, the best meals are made better by the people who share them—and the small indulgences that cap them off, as in many visits to Longhorn steakhouse in Manila.
